A writer is the program that takes the data (spoolfile ) and sends it to printer or other device used for printing.
Printers that have a functional "device description" use a standard writer.
We can also send printed output to other platforms (Unix, Windows etc) where we can't use a normal "device description" This is where the RemoteOutq and remote writers come into use If you are familiar with LPD/LPR then you now how RemoteOutqs work.

A RemoteOutq sends data via LPR and we use it when we can't use a device description. We use the CRTOUTQ cmd and set the IP address and other properties for where we want the print job to go. Now print jobs can be placed in the outq.

To send the the spoolfiles we use the STRRMTWTR cmd in place of STRPRTWTR for a regular printer.

Hope this helps

Where can I learn more about writers? What I am primarily interested in knowing is what exactly is a writer? What is a remote writer? How is it different from the remote outq and what is the usage of a remote writer.

Where can I find answer to these questions?
