Rick,

When someone makes a "throwaway line" like that, there is an element of wanting it to be the truth there ... the "tongue in cheek" was obvious, but so was the underlying attitude that it conveyed! The word "mercenary" comes to mind!

I run a software company. Programmers are our greatest expense item. Period! I think that I understand compensation better than I want to.

In most companies, IT staff is compensated at significantly higher levels than other positions requiring comparable academic preparation, experience, and responsibility for results. That point is not lost on corporate executives.

People wonder why companies consider outsourcing ... after a "big desk" person overhears "tongue in cheek" remarks like those at the coffee pot or walking down the hall, it can trigger an impression that too often leads to considering an outsourcing decision that might otherwise have been ignored. I have listened to many CEO's of companies describe their IT staff as spoiled, mercenaries, and not in sync with corporate direction. Those are the sentiments that open the door to an outsourcing discussion ...

... just my $.02 ... from someone who doesn't even outsource to local independent contractors.

John,

first of all, I've been a fence sitter over outsourcing (at least the
offshore version). I don't like what's going on, and it hurts my bottom
line, but if I were in sitting at the 'big desk', I would be crazy if I
didn't seriously consider doing the same thing.

second of all, can't you tell a tongue planted firmly in cheek when you
read it?

... and you dare complain about outsourcing ... that's the kind of attitude

that drives corporate management toward finding lower cost
alternatives!!!!!
