Tres cool, Dave. We're just beginning to think around here that this can be pretty useful. I've not confirmed it, but maybe, In SQL, if, when the sort sequence for SQL is *LANGIDSHR, there is an ORDER BY on the indexed column, then the optimizer might actually use this index, instead of a sort or temporary index on its own.

Now in RPG, as you are doing, does the data come back untranslated - i.e., in its original case?. I'm thinking it should, as the actual records of the PF are not changed.

Whoopee!!

Vern,

Fantastic! I tried this out and it is just what I was looking for.

Thanks

There is a way - hardly believe it myself. I did this in interactive SQL - take F13, then option 1 to change session attributes. Page down and change sort sequence to *LANGIDSHR. Then go back out and create your index. UC & LC will be together.

This can be set when compiling something with SQL in it; also, CRTQMQRY and RUNSQLSTM both have a sort sequence parameter. To change locally in a program, probably something like "set option" or whatever that thing is.
