Agreed, The vendors change capabilities and IBM never updates the documentation, but it seems best to go back to the simplest case here and try to work forward with a config that actually works. Once LPR can be achieved, then we can adapt the config to *LAN device. According to the knowledge base, these printers don't support the SNMP driver; just the LPR/LPD driver. Heck, the printer documentation doesn't even say it is supported.
