That is what I thought. Have you checked the 342 on RS/6000? I know the 342 works on win2k/netware. The thing is pricey ($2,000) and eBay has 7208-341 auction ending tomorrow currently at $360, probably could be had for $500. But if the thing is not going to be recognized by my 9406-720, there is no point bidding. Further, I can pick up a 8900 for much less than that for my win2k/netware servers.

The firmware is probably be the only difference.  It's different precisely
to keep you from using it (341) on the AS/400.  The 7208 is not the only
example of this.

IBM shares many peripherals/components (tape, optical, disk, memory) among
their various platforms.  Not surprisingly, the iSeries folks (Rochester)
wants you to buy them from them.  Model firmware is the easiest way to
enforce this.

The RS/6000 is less restricted only because it's sold to a more price
competitive market.  3rd party disk/peripherals are allowed.  Your 400 tape
drive (342) should work on it.

Folks:

I know the 7208-341 tape drive attaches to RS/600 and 7208-342 attaches
to AS/400.  Besides this obvious difference, is there any other
differences?  Can the 341 attach to the AS/400 and vice versa?  Both use
Exabyte Mammoth 8900 HVD SCSI drive under the cover.  Both use IDRC for
compression.   I suspect some firmware (FECODE & EECODE)  differences
but what else?  Has anybody used the 341?
