If I understand the question, you can put literals into the SELECT that is used for the VALUES clause.

insert into totable values(select field01, 'a literal', field07 from fromfile)

Basically, have a matching column in the subselect for each column in the destination table, filling in with character or numeric literals as needed, and use expressions, maybe, to ensure data-type compatibility. If you need things from multiple source files, perhaps a join is in order.

Another option is to use a SELECT in a QMQRY, and set the output of STRQMQRY to *OUTFILE with OUTMBR(*N *ADD). You'd use the same SELECT as you have in the above subselect.

Pardon my lameness, but how would one insert rows into a table using a
combination of a subselect and values? I want to insert a row(s) where
some columns would be filled by a select of another table, and other
columns in the same row would be literal values. Also, how does this lame
one insert only a few columns in a table from a subselect? In other
words, I want to put the value in the third column of the selected table
into the first column of the target table. Can you specify totable.column
= fromtable.column?

TIA...
