And don't think it is only power - don't forget about telecomm. At my
previous employer I was surprised to have the operator call me and say there
were two gentlemen from Ameritech that wanted to see me. They were there
install equipment to handle an "alternate circuit" into our facility (then
300,000 square feet, now 600,000 square feet. This was almost 10 years ago,
but if our main feed was cut, we could "plug into" this other circuit and
they would reroute everything.

Bob,

Diesel is the best way to go on larger generators.  It's cheaper than gas
out here these days!  :-)  I have a 300 KW diesel powered generator out in
back of the building here with a 300 gallon tank.  It will carry the load of
the whole building for 30 hours.  I also have a contract with a local vendor
for fuel service that carries penalties if the SLA is not met.    

Every time the fuel gets to half a tank and I have it filled, I put an
additive in the tank to keep the crud from growing in there.  So far it has
worked well and no problems with bad fuel.  We are into our 3d year with
this generator.

Here in California, it would be almost impossible to get a tank for 7 - 10
days worth of fuel storage, above or below ground.  The safety and
environmental codes that have to be adhered to would be against it.  We had
a heck of a time getting the permits for the tank we do have.

I don't know if it is possible to cover ALL possible problems.

And 2 days is not long enough anyway.  I remember when in the
late 90's there was a fire in an electrical vault in downtown
Seattle.  The company I worked for (Sullivan Payne Co or Sedgwick
James) was without power for 4 days.

There is an Ameritech Switching station right next door to me now
and they have a huge NG generator.

Diesel is probably good to...but what if you cant get
resupplyied? As you say, it would take a huge tank to last 7-10
days.  And then you have problems with the fuel going bad!  Yes,
mold can live in diesel and contaminate it!
