Query - convert char to numeric

I've seen the workaround CUSTN = MICROSECOND('2002-04-01-01.01.01.'||CUSTA)
to accomplish the character to numeric conversion in Query. 
However I may or may not have a valid numeric to start with. The 1st time I
ran it I received a data mapping error 
17 (17 -- The format of the data in a date, time, or timestamp field is not
valid). How can I work around this in my workaround?
