Thanks to all who sent me suggestions for the problem.
It turns out that in some cases, the DHCP is on the AS/400, and in others
its somewhere else.
So I'm going to use a mix of the offered suggestions, using DHCP if on the
AS/400, and writing a note to the IFS from the PC for all others.

Thanks again

Subject: Re: Finding a specific PC IP address when dynamically assigned

I set DHCP with Dynamic DNS up on a V5R1 test box to see how it operated
and it worked a treat. To get it working I used the "iSeries IP Networks:
Dynamic" redbook:

http://publib-b.boulder.ibm.com/Redbooks.nsf/9445fa5b416f6e32852569ae006bb65
f/8f6b4c85d704a6fa85256d98005ecd2b?OpenDocument

It took me a bit of effort at the time (there were two drafts hanging
around as I recall) but it would have to be less effort and more reliable
than trying to piece together a hack to obtain the IP address short of
changing where the conversation is initiated.
