With that argument then open source isn't really free because you've taken away the productivity the person could have been spent elsewhere, like seeing your ads on TV and purchasing your products. Main point is there's a mistaken economic view here, which is widespread: iSeries Navigator is "free" in the "Open"-Source-cult sense only. When it's "free", then EVERYBODY (who buys a 400, or even possibly a zMainframe) is paying for iSeries Navigator, indirectly via micropayments... As you probably know, there is no such thing as a free lunch, just cost-shifting. NOT saying whether sharing the cost of development amongst a wide market is right or wrong, a-TALL... But cost-shifting is entirely different than free. | -----Original Message----- | [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of rob@xxxxxxxxx | That's odd. Because, yes you do pay extra for 5250. However, iSeries | Navigator is a freebie. Therefore, how is the ability to access some of | these features tied into a charge? Assuming that by "only way to access | half the latest OS/400 enhancements" you meant iSeries Navigator. | | <snip> | On the other hand, everything I've ever heard about CA supports my | suspicions about it being overpriced bloatware that nobody'd buy if IBM | weren't making it the only way to acccess half the latest OS/400 | enhancements. | | -- | JHHL | <endsnip> | | | Rob Berendt _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
