This is good only for DLOs, which we are told not to use, if we can help it.

David mentioned the C stat() function - there is also the access() API function, which has a direct test for existence. It is reliable only in languages that can use pointers - I've used it successfully, IIRC, in CL, but that is an accident and not to be recommended.
