We use Win XP on desktop with Netserver, and we do not get prompted for a
password once you make the first connection.  We do not use guest accounts
either, so Netserver is good, but would not recommend it for those users
still on Win98, due to not being able to have different user-ids and
passwords for different drive mappings.
