Oliver,
The browser announcement is the way a computer tells the local network that
it is there. That information is captured by all the computers on that
network, so it can be displayed in the "Network Neighborhood". The need for
announcements is eliminated if you have a domain controller and/or WINS
server in your network...

You can safely turn it off if you want. If you do NOT have WINS on your
network, then the as400 would simply vanish from the "Network Neighborhood".
You could still connect to it if you know the netserver name.

Subject: NetServer Browsing announcement interval

Hello,

our Windoze Servers report "illegal datagrams" sent from our AS/400 every
12 minutes. I found that the Netserver settings have this
Browsing announcement parameter which is set to 12 minutes.

What is this thing used for and could I turn it off without causing
problems?

Thanks,

Oliver
