I remember having come across a similar problem. I ended up displaying the contents of the joblog to a spooled file, copying the spooled file to a database file and reading that database file. Processing all of the messages from the joblog could become cumbersome if you have a busy job/joblog. You can send a message to the *EXT message queue prior to your request that identifies the beginning of processing and do the same to indicate end of processing (I used custom message identifiers) When I was reading the database file I was deliberately looking for those identifiers. I knew that the messages I was looking for were found between those two identifiers. I hope this helps.
