If you can copy the image out of the pdf into word then the rest is easy.
If the image fits on the screen you could probably do a print screen, paste
it into Paint, trim it to what you want it to look like, copy it and paste
it into Word.

Onece you've got it into Word here's how I do it:

1. Make sure the IBM AFP printer driver is set up as a Windows printer.
If not, it can be downloaded from
http://www.printers.ibm.com/R5PSC.NSF/408caa37f0e043bd87256747000b3300/87256
8890059c03c87256b67006f4aff?OpenDocument.

2. Create the document that will become the overlay image. This can be done
in Word, Excel, or any PC-based software that can print to a Windows
printer.

3. Choose print and select the IBM AFP 240 printer driver. Check the print
to file check box. Click the properties button. Click on output type and
select "medium overlay". Click OK to accept. Click OK to create the .PRN
file.

4. Transfer the file to the AS/400:
Click on the START button, select programs, accessories, command
prompt. When the command prompt window opens you will need to FTP the file
to a folder on the AS/400 as follows:

cd {path to location of overlay file from the print operation above} ftp
{system name} bin cd /qdls/folder put overlay.prn quit

On the AS/400:
1. Create a temporary physical file on the AS/400 to copy into:
CRTPF FILE(library/WORKF) RCDLEN(8201) LVLCHK(*NO)

2. Copy the overlay file from the folder to the physical file:
CPYFRMPCD FROMFLR(folder) TOFILE(library/WORKF) FROMDOC(myovl.prn) TRNTBL
(*NONE) TRNFMT(*NOTEXT)

3. Create your overlay:
CRTOVL OVL(library/MYOVL) FILE(library/WORKF) MBR(MYOVL)

4. You may now specify this overlay in the FRONTOVL parameter of the printer
file or OVRPRTF of a CL program. It should overlay the generated output
(when printed from the AS/400).
NOTE: The Printer device type (DEVTYPE) must be of type *AFPDS.

Is there a publicly-available, IRS official 2003 W-2 laser form bitmap or
other graphic format that can be imported into Microsoft Word? I did the
obvious and checked out the irs.gov website, but as far as I can tell, they
offer only info-only W2 forms. And only PDF files.

I am brand new to overlays, and I am being instructed that we create
overlays from Word documents, therefore, the W-2 laser form must be in a
format that can be imported into Word. From the Word document a series of
steps follow that turn it into an *OVL object on the 400. Can a PDF be
turned into an AS/400 overlay object?

We're at v5r2 and have:

Licensed Installed Installed
Program Description Release Status
5722AF1 AFP Utilities V5R2M0 *COMPATIBLE
5798AF3 AFP PrintSuite for AS/400 V3R7M1 *INSTALLED

TIA, GA
