Don, do you catch the "Optical device OPTxx is empty" message? It's OPT1660 and comes through as an *ESCAPE in a program and is monitorable. (It's a diagnostic from a command line.).

Of course, this is a local check. The following can check a remote device and get the same monitorable message back:

SBMRMTCMD CMD('dspopt *mounted opt01')
          DDMFILE(VERN/MYDDMF)

It only requires that you create a DDM file on the local system, *IP type, that points to the remote system. Tres cool!
