Booth, a valid question. For data entry, I've always contended that text base in general, and 5250 in particular can't be beat. So, I'm not against that option on principle, but you know how things are... top 5 points against greenscreen, in reverse order of importance. 5) web development is more fun :) 4) I would really like to explore some of the WAS, Java stuff, sometime before I retire. 3) I like the idea of using domino for the collaborative aspects. It's a good fit, if I can fit the rest into it. 2) The iseries already sports the black eye of "old technology" in this organization for a lot of reasons, none of them the iseries's fault (i.e. a poor choice of the accounting system). If I recommend a green screen solution, it perpetuates that idea, and some around here would start looking for another platform. and the number 1 reason) it would add 400 interactive users to our box. That's 40 to 440 users - not an option -------Original Message------- Just for a casual question... If the data files are designed the way you like, what happens if you use green screen but start with a clean plate? The new tools available and the new design techniques add a lot of function and speed. Instead of being patchwork perhaps it could be a model for the future. GUI is nice of course but text-based still does a lot of nice stuff. --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Date: 11/25/2003 4:00:21 PM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: RE: Where would you start? Gary, good suggestions all - in fact most of this is already spec'd out. The workflow has already been charted, and I could implement 5 or 6 things to improve the existing process in short order, but my fears (and those of management) are that these would only be patches, rather than a strategic long solutions, and any half-a** attempt at shoring up the existing system would be throwing good money after bad. The other fear is that we could get ourselves into a quagmire of just-learned technologies and techniques that won't work as thought or advertised - more good money after bad. The stores are already on a vpn, in fact they can get nowhere except our network, and specific sites of our choosing. I guess what I'm looking for is the actual design/programming platforms that would lend themselves to our requirements. thanks, Rick
