I'm afraid that could mean any of the above. One co. may have some
proprietary socket interface which they expect their own PC client 
software
to talk to and another has only an HTTP interface because they expect 
humans
on web browsers. As you have seen, it seems several of them offer email
interfaces.

The only thing I've personally worked on is TAP, which was nice because it
was at least a de-facto standard for a while.
