I didn't mean that 24x7 of their labor was supposed to be gratis.  It's 
just that there are people who used to manage to speak at COMMON, and/or 
participate in newsletters, who dropped back from one or the other because 
of either a change of employer who didn't want them giving something away 
for nothing, or they independently found someone willing to pay them for 
what they were doing for nothing.

I wasn't implying either a) or b). In your original post you state that 
people "don't want to give away what they can charge for" - granted, there 
are things that one can do as a loss leader but your statement seems to be 
the basic tenet for earning a living, either as self employed or as a 
business entity. But you may do business differently in your part of the 
world.
