Thanks for the information Infoprint Server. I hope to upgrade to V5R2 while
it's still in wide use. (I'm on a 720 that will need quite a bit of
replacement parts to support V5R2.)

I can create PDFs today (via Brad's tools) and the OpsNav drag'n'drop is
really cool. PDFs are useful when sending reports outside the company, but not
really as useful inside. More often than not, a "report" usually translates
into a "data file" request.

The problem is "data availability" options where our ERP software only
generates spooled output, with no options for output files, CSV, etc. Some of
my users are very adept at downloading the data directly and deriving the
results they need. One of our accountants has quite a few TTOs in his network
directory...

I've been asked to "give me an Excel version of this report" which is a
de-normalized version of the data. Even worse, our ERP package uses Synon (and
we don't have the models), so it's extremely difficult to determine what the
report programs are doing based on the generated RPG code.

I looked at Monarch quite a few years ago, but i don't think the version I saw
could handle some of the package's more complex reports. I'll have to look
into RJS software. Reinventing a wheel can be fun but the business need is
more important and should pay for the software quickly.
