No. There is an OpenOffice port that runs on OS X, but it isn't that great. It uses X-Windows instead of the native OS X graphics so it doesn't feel like an OS X app. There was work on a native port, but that has been postponed until 2006. Apparently, it was decided to rework a lot of the UI code in OpenOffice to make it more portable on all OS's, so they decided not to work on the OS X port until that is done which is 2005. StarOffice is basically just OpenOffice with support and some extras that can't be given away for free, like licensed fonts. Mark To: <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> cc: bcc: Subject: RE: why linux? I do not think MS owns even 1% of Apple. Several years ago they entered into an agreement with Apple where they agreed to continue develop Office for Mac and they also invested $100 million or something in exchange for Apple making IE the default web browser. As I said, that agreement has now expired and Apple now has its own browser - Safari, as well as apps like Keynote which directly compete. You either need Office file compatibility or you don't. If you don't then there are good Mac alternatives. If you do, then the best option is just to run Office. Mark Thank you for taking the time to make such a thorough reply, Mark. I'll hafta give it some more thought. Particularly about whether I can, as well as should, avoid absolutely ALL use of M$ products like I've tried to do GPL'd products in the past. (Last I heard, MicroSoft owned a 20% stake in Apple.) | -----Original Message----- | [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Mark Phippard <snip great stuff> _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l. _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l. .
