Yep, I am, unfortunately learning this the hard way, and not looking to
good right now. Would probably have gone with someone else (actually
guarantee you that) but their "discount" on our production software
package gets a "really good" discount if we go with them and I was
unsuccessful in convincing the powers that be to seriously entertain
others... In a way I guess I had a feeling something like this would
happen and I'm not a cynic !

By the way Al, how did you do out there in "no power land" ?

Chuck

That's why you do business with a BP that totally understands LPAR, and
is prepared to bundle in with the purchase price the services necessary
to make it work. LPARs are so complicated, that we charge for LPAR
configs! Unfortunately IBM has no LPAR Value Add, as they should.

NO lie Al... I can't IMAGINE what it would be like for an upgrade... We
are TOTALLY swapping out a 620 with an 810 LPAR'd. Our BP filled out the
"what ever it is called" work sheet or what ever that IBM wants them to
do and it gets OK'd I guess. Then the system comes in (it did this week)
and there is NOTHING but LIC on it. And as you note Al, the cards
weren't in the correct slots, etc. You would THINK that there would be
some correlation between the config sheet and what you get in... Nope.
This all was news to me. I understood there would be some work to do
with LPAR but had no idea drives had to be added, RAID'd, etc. Had am
individual I know that had been to LPAR school tell me that when this
was brought up in class (watch the card placement mess) the instructor
noted "these things are designed by PHD's and assembled by folks with
high school diplomas... Of course this is good for IGS...

In an LPAR environment, you take one physical system and partition it
into multiple logical systems. This has very specific hardware
requirements, and is generally more difficult to configure and install.
IBM does not build the system properly, you need to swap around parts.
This is particularly true if you are going to upgrade an existing
system.

HI I am trying to see if I understand about LPARS. I understand the high
level. That you can use resources of other machines, that you can create
a very controlled environment.

Is there more - Is there alot of detail work for an admin in a shop that
uses LPARS extensively.

Thanks,
Rob
