Just for security reasons I don't like direct ODBC access to my machine.
I prefer JSP and servlets calling RPG programs.  And with that
architecture, the system flies.

As to SQL Server, have you tried running a hundred users on a hundred
million record database on it?  If your needs are small enough to use a
PC-based database, and the security and backup capabilities are
sufficient, then by all means do so.  No sense using a sledgehammer to
crack eggs.
