I had posted that I could not get the system to ipl from the v5r2 install cd after the license expired on the system. We will be going back to the v5r1 that we have a license for, but I did want to see if v5r2 could be reloaded. Once I corrected my mistake of working the front panel switches and set to IPL from D, the reinstall of v5r2 was able to proceed. For some reason the system reported the disk config as corrupt and I had to take the options to recover the disk config. This cleared all the drives so we lost all the data on the drives. ( and since our tape drive does not function on v5r2, that is not good ) bottom line, the install was completed and the license count was reset to 70 days. -Steve -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Douglas Handy Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2003 10:32 PM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: Re: v5r2 license expiration Tom, >I've long had the feeling ... the control panel itself was somehow involved. I've heard the control panel is involved in the system license key, and that a scratch and reload of the DASD would not resolve that issue. However, the system license key is (I believe) intended to detect hardware changes like a processor upgrade, or potential ownership changes such as being powered off for too many consecutive days then being restarted. I'd anticipate that a reload of a different OS release would not trigger a new system password -- or at least it doesn't seem to on a OS upgrade. It should require software license keys, but then they have those for that hardware serial number anyway. I have no experience with it, but my SWAG is that it would be OK if they can reload V5R1. I'd love to hear the outcome though...
