ROWID or identity columns to store your sequence number.

Neat.  And we ARE on V5R2... but the other companies here at this client are on 
V5R1, so this won't cut it.  We got the problem sorted; one of our guys had 
expereince implementing something he called 'optimistic locking'.  I have no 
idea what that means.  When I have a chance to look at his fix, I'll report 
back, if anyone wants to know...
