I would venture to guess that if your AS/400 is running a mail server, then it's probably much easier, either by hacking or by using it as a relay station, to send email through it than it would be for it to send email without running a mail server. So far as I know, the only email action that could be called "difficult" on the 400 would be sending email from it WITHOUT having a mail server running on it. So far as I know, (a) the only way to do THAT is to write your own mail client (best done in Java, because of the JavaMail classes), and (b) given a mail server running on the box, everything else is no more difficult than it would be with any other mail server.
