embedded sql works great for this in RPGLE.
There have been many posts/examples on this in midrange-rpg
the select statement
SELECT ORDNUM  FROM ORDFILE WHERE ORDNAM LIKE '%THOMPSON%'
will give you a result set of any order with THOMPSON anywhere within field
ORDNAM.
