In case you haven't yet checked it out, Scott Klement's FTP API allows you
to implement your own custom FTP client.  Good stuff!

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Actually, the ideal solution is to write your FTP client so it can go
either way. Preferably by automatically detecting that whichever mode
you try first isn't working.
