× The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

Tested this today - if index is selected by the optimizer, the last used is updated. But not if it was used for cost estimation only, I believe. IMO, that would be good information, to prevent the situation you describe. I.e., use of the index to forestall building temporary indexes.
