I would be looking at fixing the problem and not moving the Band-Aid. You 
should not have
TCP/IP go down so many times that you have to come up with a way to get around 
it. Once
is too many times. 

If you have another AS/400 you could look at SNADS and pass through. You could 
look at
getting some old 5250 model 12 emulation cards, You could look at getting some 
old Hayes
modems that worked with client access to dial in (check that this still works). 
Or along
the lines of what Chuck is doing, setup a PC on twinax, and if you have XP pro 
look at
using Remote Desktop Connection (comes with a windows client for about any 
windows OS),
or VNC ( http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/  ) on about any OS.
