Thanks for this explanation, lets see if I have this correct taking the
assumption that my AS400 is the client and my customers Unix box is the
server,utilising active FTP mode (not passive)

1.The AS400 client sends IP & port details to the Server        
2.The server then connects back to the as400 using the IP and port details
received from the AS400

If my AS400 sends IP and port details to the server , are these the local
port details?

You say that 'the server does not listen for data connections AT ALL, the
client does that'
 
I take it that it will listen on any local port , and if found then the
remote port of 10020 would be displayed ? 

As this is being used by the server for data transmission. 

If these assumptions are correct then can I take it that the problem does
not lie with the config of the AS400 FTP client. 
The problem must lie with either the configuration of the local firewall ,
or the remote server.
