The more important question is ... why would you want to use it?

In the past 5 years, there has been a revolution in the storage business. Vast increases in magnetic disk recording densities have caused the cost / gb ratio to really flip with optical storage. Optical has gone from being the darling of the high storage requirements (like document image management) to the dunce. The very high maintenance cost and unreliability of optical jukeboxes, in addition, is driving this trend.

We have a substantial document image management practice and I would SHOOT (with a squirt gun) any of my sales reps who recommended an optical storage system today without a very high degree of justification.

Your best uses are:
- sell it for spare parts to those who can't migrate easily from it
- depending where you are located ... contribute it to an "artificial reef" project!

Folks --

We have an optical library (model 3995-C20). The tag on the back shows
it manufactured in January of 1997. It was connected to our old AS/400
(620) at one point, but never used. It is not connected to our current
iSeries (820).

Apparently it was LAN-connected to the old 620, via an OS/2 PC.

Can anyone out there tell me if I can still use the device, how I would
connect it to my 820, or anything else that might help me figure out
what to do with this thing?

Thanks!
