Joe, Just for completeness/accuracy, note that Quickstep GUI from SAS of New Zealand (http://www.quickstep.net.nz/) runs in batch and avoids the "interactive tax." The thin client GUI portion runs on the PC (actually a java program running in the JVM). I think it has been available since Jan of 2002, and earlier this year Computer Associates started to market it as an add-on to Advantage:2e. Quickstep includes smooth scrolling of subfiles and other true GUI features, but it is only for Advantage:2e-generated applications. Interestingly, the developers learned how to do this from your book!
