Joe, >So it's a wash. Hey, you brought it up, Rob, not me. But I CAN run >programs I wrote 10 years ago on the latest version of the operating system, >which I cannot do with Windows. What did you write 10 years ago under Windows which you can't still run today? Is it application type software? All the PC software I wrote a decade ago still runs fine on any flavor of Windows from 3.11 up through XP Pro. It does still run as 16-bit software, but does not require any modifications or recompilation. And because I had a tendency to use things like direct API calls to various functions, I can't just port and recompile to a newer version of the IDE or compiler without modifing the source for the tunking required. But I can still recompile it using the old compiler. And then I can move that executable even to machines using an older OS. (This is not really unlike IBM's *PRV release support running an older compiler to product a *PGM which can be restored to an old release.) So I'm curious why you can't run Windows programs you wrote 10 years ago, unless it was something like a desktop shell replacment. Doug
