Did you try X3270? How well did it work? Might need a SETKBDMAP command in your 
initial program to match up with standard 5250 function-key usage, but it 
should also work if a JAVA 5250 worked.

BTW, I haven't researched VNC much, but the following is the current trailer

With VNC becoming known to iSeries programmers, guess I better start 
researching.
