Dennis,

Switch has better thruput and less overhead in terms of network packet
collisions.  There were issues with full-duplex at 100 mbps, but I think
that's mostly fixed now.  We had trouble connecting to the switch until we
made a new cable.  The old one worked fine for 10 mbps, but wouldn't connect
at all at 100 mbps.  We have all the as400s on one switch, so that traffic
between systems is point-to-point, which seems to give a little boost to big
FTPs and the like.

Several years ago when a new building was built & a new network was
installed, we plugged the 400's into a switch.  After much trial &
tribulation, we were told to plug the 400's into a hub.

We are about to upgrade all our switches, routers, & hubs to accommodate a
new phone system & AT&T dedicated T1's to our two remote mining facilities.

The question is:  Do I still plug the 400's into a hub or a switch and/or is
there a setting that could be changed to allow use to use a switch?

In case it makes any difference we currently have 3Com 3000 switches & 3Com
dual speed 500 hubs with the router being built into the phone system, which
is ten years old.  This ancient but still functioning equipment has caused
other problems & it will be nice to see it out of here.  QoS was something
we are not able to currently do but that will change with the new equipment.

The equipment we will replace it with will be Cisco 2620 routers, Cisco 3550
and 2950 switches, & no hubs - which is why I'm asking the question in case
we still need to have a hub for the 400's.
