Good question. But information is available at InfoCenter -- Installation, upgrades, and migration ?> Install the OS/400 release and related software ?> Concepts ?> Types of software installation devices.

You could also probably find a lot through the improved support (not InfoCenter) search engine - got to www.iseries.ibm.com/support and try the search at the top of the page.

for the words "image catalog" or "imgclg" there are no hits that mean
anything.
