They aren't mandatory. Dell, for instance, has DRAC and ERA adapters/integration for their servers which basically allows an intellistation-ish sort of device to act as the Keyboard-Video-Mouse for numerous Wintels. I think it's basically an Ethernet-based connection to the KVM. They work pretty well for us.
