Peter, thanks for this summary. That's pretty much how I see the situation.

| The question is, "Can you make money doing this?" For me, there is a
| fine line between charging for distribution/warranty and charging for
| the software, except the fees for distribution/warranty will be lower
| than the cost of equivalent proprietary software. However, there are
| other fees to be gathered such as support, consulting, and upgrade
| fees.

And that's my point... Right there.

The guy that actually writes the code, He gets NO MONEY. Everybody else can
clean up on His work, except for the author.

And why's that again...???

Most-a the supposed value of "Open" Source is being able to see the source.
This was not commonly available on some platforms like *nix, and still isn't
prevalent in the M$ world. That's not an advantage of the "Open" Source
movement, that's an advantage of shipping source code with the product. A
whole LOTTA the commercial vendors I've dealt with ship source, though not
all. Some charge extra.

Again, it's important to really LOOK at the PURPORTED advantages of "Open"
Source, and You'll notice that almost every last dadburn one-a them is ALSO
an advantage found in commercial source development.

As I just posted to Alan, I believe the innovation is best left to Apple and
Rochester. MicroSoft is a mixed bag, due to corporate culture and lack of
competition. Their best innovation came when the DID have competitors, in
my recollection.

Btw, Peter, if You choose to You can read my all-caps as italics. I write
like I talk, with a little added emphasis on certain words which imparts a
LITTLE louder sound, rather than shouting. (I actually /have/ used italics
in the past, but didn't like the technique. May revisit the issue.)
