Ken, I'm VERY hard pressed to argue with this. I think that the 2-years is a bit agressive, but CLEARLY this is what it appears is happening...and in the words of one of our fellow OS/400 bigots, I think it SUCKS! I can't begin to list how much of pain in the a.. unix is over the nice stuff we have in os/400... BTW, anyone have any idea what's happening with the Caldera vs. IBM suit? Not heard anything on that in a while... Now, the bigger question you need to be asking him is who the heck is going to be writing the applications for linux....at the last linuxworld this past winter in NYC, there just weren't ALOT of what I would call core business applications. LAST YEAR'S linux world was almost a developers conference...this one actually had a good start for showing applications BEGINNING to come out of the woodwork, but frankly, I think that linux is now where Windows was 2-5 years ago...so, maybe in 2-3 years we'll see some serious applications showup in the marketplace...:) In the next 2 years you'll see a total hardware consolidation that will have i,p & z running on the same hardware from plug to platter... The "l" in AIX 5L stands for linux, btw... The next questions you need to be asking are regarding the database. How will IBM be marketing DB2...especially since Larry Ellison is the big 800 pound gorilla on the block with Oracle... And, will IBM ever unpackage DB2 from the current os/400 package and start charging for it as a seperate option as they do the database engines on all their other boxes...:) Want to think some more? Wait until I come out with the "State of the Midrange" this fall....:) Then, get ready to go back to school...
