I too enjoyed Joe's article. However, I suggest that what he attributes to IBM is really a bigger problem with the modern software industry. Ever since coders stopped being programmers and started being computer scientists, engineers and architects, I've noticed this attitude and this change in priorities. The same applies to ISVs selling "solutions" instead of "products." What this all says is, "Our thing is so cumbersome and complex we can't adequately describe it, but if it doesn't sound good to you, you're just not smart enough to appreciate it." It seems that with the slowdown in the economy, development organizations can no longer take pride in their customer base and have invented other metrics that don't require customers or customer satisfaction. Check the documentation for any large modern application or tool and you will likely find many, many, MANY pages yakking about their wonderful architecture and use of the latest technology and patting themselves on the back for it. I have been working with several such products recently, both open-source and closed. -Marty ------------------------------ date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 16:27:24 -0600 from: "Leif Svalgaard" <leif@xxxxxxxx> subject: Re: Is IBM on the right track with IBM Community Tools?
