the slot number can be fairly unpredictable depending on how the tape is used; knowing the slot numbers will not necessarily tell you what order the tapes were used in - unless you have taken some action to make it more predictable.

You may be able to work out the order the tapes were used via a combination of the job log and the save printouts if you have them. I seem to remember that the job log for a backup sends a message when it changes to a new tape that has the vol id.

My strategy for the 3570 was to re-sequence the drive before loading tapes and then use ENDOPT(*UNLOAD) as part of the save command. This ensured that tapes were used from right to left and I could see which tapes were used.

If the save ended abnormally I always checked the next tape in the sequence as well as it does not always get ejected depending on how the job ended.

Hope this helps

My backup failed over the weekend & as I was displaying all the tapes to see
what I really did have, I began to wonder how I could tell from the listing
(DATA(*LABELS)) which slot the listing is for???? The only thing I could
see was to look at the time printed & put them in order that way. I also
did a DATA(*SAVRST) and it did not have a slot number listed on the listing.

Is there any thing that would tell me which slot the DSPTAP came from?

Thanks - Dennis.
