Backup goes nowhere fast -- MIDRANGE-L

I began submitting our tape backups to subsystem QCTL so they would just
take right off and not interfere, or be interfered with other batch jobs.
Now every night the backup immediately stops claiming that device tap01 is
not ready. I reply with an "R" and the job continues just fine.
Any suggestions as to what the root cause of this might be?
