3489 dumb terminal and "400" graphic interfaces -- MIDRANGE-L

A request for AS400 users to have the capability of positioning on an item#, pressing a function key and returning with a graphical display of that merchandise has precipitated this note. I know there are many software packages out there...some cheap enough...that can handle this function fairly well but eschewing that answer for a moment, I have these questions:

1. Can the 3489 dumb terminal, with its promise of graphic support, call an API to execute a command to an NT server on the same LAN to bring back an item photo...directly to the 400 terminal itself?

2. Using a fatter PC client, how difficult is it to code an interface to the NT server directory to return a photo through the browser service?

3. Anyone know the name of some basic software to handle these requirements should the above solutions be unattainable?
