Last year we took our 720-2062/1501 to an 830-2400/1531. Big batch jump from 420 to 1850 CPWs w/o touching the 70 interactive CPWs. The machine stayed a P20 and some of the memory features were able to migrate. You can re-kit your disks but we instead turned the 720 frame into a migration tower and added more disks to the new system unit. That also let us keep our existing RAID cards, Ethernet IOPs & IPCS server (that screamin' 333MHz PII). Of course, an 830 is no longer the latest technology, but the price was reasonable and the jump in processing power was huge. You might even find a used 830 chassis for a reasonable price. Estimated life? http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/hardware/life.html only covers through mid-2002. I would guess upgrades from 820/830s into 825s will be valid through at least 2004 and quite possibly 2005. - John -----Original Message----- From: Frank.Kolmann@xxxxxxxxxx [mailto:Frank.Kolmann@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2003 4:40 PM To: midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: iseries 820 models Thanks for the suggestion Kirk. I still have some issues that are not clear to me. If someone can correct me it will be greatly appreciated. These are the issues as I see them. The 820 is last years model and can use the 720 disks etc. The 810 and 825 are this years models and effectively cannot use anything from the 720. Also the 810 has NO supported upgrade path, if you ever need to upgrade it you must buy an entirely new machine (new Serial #), this has horrendous consequences if you have purchased software that is contracted by Serial #. So effectively if you have a 720 you are forced to get an 825. IBM are withdrawing support for the 720, as a business one is obligated to operate software/hardware that is supported by the supplier. The 825 is more than we need. The 810 is a dead end. I need to know what is the projected life span of the 820 and what is the upgrade path from the 820.
