I can't figure out how to make that 7 digit date work.

I looked at the help and see something like:
DATE:
         Syntax for:     DATE(expression)
         Example of:     DATE(CHARDATE)
    The DATE function returns a date from a value.
...
, or a character
    string of length 7.

Why that?

If you can build another logical file over that I can whip up a fix in a
hurry.
