How many people in my area read this list?  Quite a few.  Nontech?  Lots 
less, if any.

Websites are good.  However, something has to lead them to the web site. 
And, like the headhunters say, sometimes it is better to contact the ones 
who aren't searching.

So how many people in your local area do you think actually read that

David said that you can post on the non-tech list if you are having a 
major 
speaker.

As well, if you are having a major speaker I think it would be in order to 

post in the comp.sys.ibm.as400.misc newsgroup.

Beyond that, websites are a better way of attracting new people than a 
mailing list.  A Yahoo! email group or other such mailing list would be a 
way to keep the regulars abreast of information.  A group Yahoo! also 
includes a mini, pre-structured website with an archive of messages, a 
file 
area, etc.

To attract new people, make sure that you are listed at 
http://www.eserverusergroup.org/ (which seems to be down at the moment) 
and 
other such places.

If one does not already exist, start a small website for your user 
group.  If you set up a Yahoo! Group, that gives you a place to start, but 

you'll probably want something with more flexibility before too long.  Use 

free hosting if necessary.  (In my area the major newspaper offers free 
hosting to public services groups.)  Make sure that it gets submitted to 
search engines.  Get your local major organizations that provide community 

links to link to it.

Since we have drifted away from midrange technical stuff, if you wish to 
discuss this further lets either move it to the non-tech list or private 
email.
