The printer is a IBM Model 6400.   Obviously I know almost nothing about
printers.  Which would work well and not mess up the Sys/36 side of the
application?

Hi Booth,

As Pat Barber mentioned, many of the 4234 models supported a wide variety of
CPI values. One of the earliest non-IPDS models of IBM 4234 (the model 002)
only supported 10 and 15 CPI. Your rather new printer sounds like it is
emulating this particular model of IBM 4234 which is preventing you from
requesting that the printer use 12 CPI.

As Pat mentioned in his post, you will need to find out the actual model of
IBM printer that you have received to know what it can actually do. If it
can emulate a 4214 model 002, that would give you support for requesting the
following CPI values from the host: 5, 8.5, 10, 12, 15, and 16.7. The
physical printer mechanism would determine which of the CPI's could actually
be supported.
