I guess the question to be asked is if it's still on hardware maintenance.
If NOT on HW maintenance, power it down, rip the covers off, slap the card
in and turn it on.

If it IS on maintenance, buy the card from IBM and it will magically be
installed, since that's not a CIF machine.  I doubt you'll be able to get it
direct being that old.

At any rate, to do it right he'll only have to sell one or two of those
ThinkPads.

All parts can be CIF, just depends on how much knowledge of the machine you
have, as well as if it's still on maintenance or not.
