With the possible exception of *nixs, ALL OSes are proprietary. While windows may run on hardware from multiple vendors, they are still all x86, IBM PC based systems, Even NT is only available on x86 boxes now. OS390 only runs on 390's/z-series systems, OS/400 only runs on the AS400/i-series, etc. The only difference between the proprietariness of windows, and OS/400 or any other OS is how many developers there are that develop for it.
